Stirling Central Library

Stirling’s Central Library is a Carnegie Library, designed by Harry Ramsey Taylor in the Scottish Baronial style in 1904.

During the 20th century public libraries were being created across Scotland and competitions were held to select the winning designs. The creation of many of these libraries, including Stirling’s, was partially funded by Andrew Carnegie, the Scottish-American philanthropist.

Edinburgh architect Harry Ramsey Taylor beat local architect John Allan when his design for Stirling’s Central Library won. It is built in the Scots Baronial Style, which gives it a fairy-tale-castle quality. The foundation stone for Stirling’s Central Library was laid in 1902, and it opened in 1904.

John Allan won second place as well as 30 guineas. Third place and 20 guineas went to MacLuckie & Walker, other well-known local architects.
