Accesskeys

To aid your navigation, this site uses the accesskeys outlined below. To jump to a particular section of the site, Windows users should hold down the Alt key and press the appropriate accesskey. Mac users should hold down the Ctrl key and press the appropriate accesskey. In both cases, press Enter to activate the link. This function is only supported by Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 or later, and Netscape Navigator 6 or later.

Screen Resolution

This site is designed to be viewed at 1024x768 screen resolution. To change your screen resolution on a Windows PC:

  1. Select Settings from the Start menu.
  2. Select Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Display.
  4. Click Settings.
  5. Use the Screen Area slide rule to change the resolution.
  6. Click OK.
You may need to click Refresh or Reload on your browser for these changes to take effect.

Fonts and Colours

We only use sans serif fonts. If you are using Internet Explorer, you can override the default font and colour settings of this site in order to make it more legible for you:

  1. Select Tools from the menu bar.
  2. Select Internet Options.
  3. Click Accessibility.
  4. Select the defaults you wish to ignore and override.
  5. Click OK.
To specify your own display colours for backgrounds, text and links:
  1. Select Tools from the menu bar.
  2. Select Internet Options.
  3. Click Colors.
  4. Deselect Use Windows Colors.
  5. Click on the palettes and select your preferred colours.
  6. Click OK.
To specify your own display fonts:
  1. Select Tools from the menu bar.
  2. Select Internet Options.
  3. Click Fonts.
  4. Select your preferred fonts.
  5. Click OK.

Image Loading

If you are using Internet Explorer, you can also switch off image loading to improve legibility:

  1. Select Tools from the menu bar.
  2. Select Internet Options.
  3. Click Advanced.
  4. Scroll down to the Multimedia checkboxes.
  5. Deselect Show Pictures.
  6. Click OK.

Our editorial policy follows best practice in the use of accessible English and information design. Our information is addressed to everyone, and is always proof-read and checked against the Plain English Campaign guidelines before we make it live. We always aim:

  1. To use non-technical language.
  2. Never to use acronyms, unless we have spelt them out previously.
  3. To keep our sentences and paragraphs short and concise.
  4. To adhere to formal grammar and correct spelling.
  5. To use personal pronouns when addressing the reader.
  6. To itemise using bullet points wherever possible.
  7. To use whitespace liberally.
  8. To leave our text unjustified and ragged along the right-hand edge.
