About Us: Frequently Asked Questions

What?

Stirling City Heritage Trust is an independent company limited by guarantee. It has been established to promote and encourage, either alone or in conjunction with others, the protection and preservation of historic, architectural and landscape heritage within the City of Stirling. The Trust is achieving charitable status, and will work for the benefit of the built heritage and the general public now and in the future.

Where?

The Trust is able to operate across the whole of the area covered by Stirling Council. However, the immediate focus of the Trust's work is the City of Stirling. The Trust is currently based at Viewforth, Stirling.

Who?

The Trust's Board is made up of five Directors, of which two are appointees of Stirling Council. The Head of Planning and Regulation at Stirling Council advises the Board. The Trust supports one full time post, that of Trust Manager. Biographical details of the Board can be found by clicking here.

How?

Historic Scotland and Stirling Council fund the Trust. The Trust has powers to:

  • carry out and promote research
  • provide advice, assistance and distribute information
  • co-operate with other organisations
  • repair, restore, and preserve properties
  • make arrangements to enable the public to view and enjoy properties
  • make grants and loans of money

The ambition of the Trust is to provide a distinctive, additional and effective service for the benefit of Stirling's heritage. It is also intended that the Trust will become more self-sufficient and less dependent on any single organisation for support.

For further information about the work of the Trust, please complete and return an enquiry form by clicking here.

When?

The Trust was established in 2004.  Presently, funding is guaranteed until March 2009.  However, it is intended that the Trust will continue to operate for as long as there is a need for the heritage of the City of Stirling to be conserved and promoted.

The Board of the Trust meets every three months, with a grants sub-committee and other project groups meeting on a more frequent basis. Minutes of the Board meetings will be available online in due course.

Why?

The Trust's vision for the City's historic environment is that this rich resource can be:

  • better and more widely understood
  • better conserved and enhanced for future generations through good maintenance and careful use
  • capable of providing a vibrant context for modern day activity
  • a catalyst for environmental, cultural, economic, and social change for the better

The Trust wishes to inspire the communities, organisations and businesses within the City to appreciate and take pride in the heritage around them and to stimulate debate on how it should be passed on to future generations.
